American Idiot, the chart-topping 2004 album from punk band Green Day, is heading to the stage, according to The New York Times. Tony-winning director Michael Mayer, who made a hit musical out of the music of Duncan Sheik in Spring Awakening, will helm the musical, also called American Idiot and set to bow at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California in September.
American Idiot was conceived as a rock opera centering around the life of an anti-hero called Jesus of Suburbia. The album sold 12 million copies worldwide and features hit singles like “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and the title song. It also was honored with a 2005 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
Mayer approached Green Day—made up of band members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool—alongside Spring Awakening producer Tom Hulce about the idea of adapting the album. After two workshops in 2008, which introduced theatrical orchestrations for the songs by Next to Normal composer Tom Kitt and choreography by Steven Hoggett, the band agreed to get the show on its feet.
Mayer revealed to The New York Times that the show will include a cast of 19 actors, although no casting has been announced.
American Idiot will play at Berkeley Rep from September 4 through October 11.
